Healthy Grilling: DIY Seasonings!

Summer time is one of my favorite seasons! Food always tastes better cooked on the grill! Cooking on the grill can be healthy and fits into the 21 Day Fix Plan so easily.

Seasoning mixes are a great way to add flavor and variety without adding calories and using those precious grilling seasoning - DIY for healthy grillingcontainers or teaspoons on the 21 Day Fix or other healthy food plan.  But you have to be aware of what is in those store bought seasonings and marinades! Hydrogenated oils, sugars, dyes, …. By making your own you can control the salts, sugars and other ingredients. They don’t cost a lot to make and can be used on fish, chicken, meats and vegetables! Make them as you need them or make large batches and store them in airtight containers. Re-using empty spice jars works great!  

Some seasoning mixes can even be turned into marinades by adding vinegar, wine and healthy oils. Below are some of our favorite seasoning mixes! So fire up that grill and sizzle your way to delicious healthy foods!

Basic Grilling Seasoning

3 tablespoons fresh coarse ground black pepper 
1 tablespoons sea salt
1 tablespoon onion powder 
1 tablespoon garlic powder 
1 tablespoon ground coriander 
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

Italian Seasoning

1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon crushed Rosemary
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground thyme
1/4 teaspoon celery seed

Thyme Will Tell Seasoning

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/4 teaspoon celery seed
1/8 teaspoon ground cumin
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 
1/8 teaspoon chicken bouillon granules

Montreal Seasoning Mix

1/4 cup kosher salt or coarse ground sea salt
1/4 cup black ground pepper
1/4 cup dried onion flakes
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 tablespoons garlic powder

Pork Seasoning

1/4 cup kosher salt or coarse ground sea salt
1/4 cup black ground pepper
2 Tablespoons celery salt
2 tablespoons smoked paprika 
1 tablespoon ground fennel

Basic Seasoning for Fish

1 tablespoons ground cumin 
1 tablespoons coarse ground pink Himalayan salt or sea salt
1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoon ground all spice
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon ground turmeric 
Pinch of cayenne pepper 

Lemon Chicken Grilling Seasoning

1/2 teaspoon onion powder
Ground black pepper to taste
Pink Himalayan salt to taste
2 teaspoon dried parsley
1 – 2 fresh squeezed lemons

Brush chicken with lemon juice before sprinkling with seasonings

Chicken Marinade

This is a great marinade for chicken thighs! It is clean and healthy and the result is oh so tender chicken!

  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • ½ cup honey
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 3 cloves of garlic, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger, chopped
  • 1 cup crushed pineapple

Mix all ingredients in a plastic bag. Place chicken in the bag and refrigerate for two to three hours before grilling

Barbecue Beef Seasoning Rub

2 1/2 tablespoons organic brown sugar
1 tablespoons smoked paprika
1 tablespoon ground paprika
2 teaspoons mustard powder
2 teaspoons onion powder
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil
1 teaspoon ground bay leaves
3/4 teaspoons ground coriander
3/4 teaspoon ground savory
3/4 teaspoon ground thyme
3/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
3/4 teaspoon ground while pepper 
1/8 tsp ground cumin
Sea salt to taste

Rub seasoning into meat. Wrap the meat in plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. 

Mesquite Seasoning

1 tablespoon paprika 
1 teaspoon cumin 
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 
1/2 teaspoon onion powder 
1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary 
1/4 teaspoon dried rosemary
1/2 teaspoon dried sage
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1 teaspoon organic brown sugar
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 
1 teaspoon dried onion flakes
