Anyone that knows me knows that I love kitchen tools and gadgets. Grilling is no exception.
A grill is a given. Choosing between gas or charcoal is a personal choice. But what other tools or gadgets help you grill smarter and healthier? Below are our favorite tools for grilling as well as tips for success! What are yours?
A long handled spatula! – This tool is a definite must have for grilling. How can you flip Burgers, fish, and French toast with out a spatula. To protect you from heat and flames a long handle is needed.
Grill Mitts – A long handled spatula may not be enough protection from the heat of a flaming grill. Mitts that almost reach your elbow are best. Fire retardant mitts will keep you safe as you flip and shift food from one side of the grill to another.
Meat Thermometer – It isn’t enough to cook delicious food but it is important to keep everyone healthy by cooking meats to the proper temperature. An instant read meat thermometer is the way to honeyed cooking on the grill!
Long handled silicone basting brush. Again it is all about keeping from getting burned and the long handle is a must. In addition a silicone brush is much easier to clean resulting in safer, healthier grilling by avoiding contaminating food.
Grill brush – A clean grill keeps everyone healthy! Allow your grill to heat at high for 10 to 15 minutes before grilling to incinerate anything that lingered from your last grilling session. Then brush the grates vigorously with a good grill brush to make sure that the grates are clean. Better yet purchase grill cleaners and clean your grill after each use rinsing it well.
Long handled tongs – like the long handled spatula, long handled tongs keep your hand away from the heat of the grill. You can turn and flip goods a spatula can’t such as asparagus, sausages, steaks, chicken…
Grill basket – This handy tool is great for grilling vegetables and delicate fruits such as pineapple. It keeps good from slipping through the grates.
Shish kabob skewers – these are great for cooking vegetables, and small pieces of meat and fish. Wooden ones are cheap but make sure and disk them in water for 30 minutes to keep them from burning.
Grilling pan or stone – A flat grilling pan is great for grilling pizza and for foods that easily slip through the grates.
OUR TOP TEN GRILLING TIPS
Buy the best meat you can afford! Make sure you tenderize and marinate tougher, cheaper cuts of meat.
Check your fuel ahead of time! Nothing worse than running out of fuel or charcoal before your dinner finishes cooking.
Organization is key! Have tools, marinades, seasoning grill-side before you fire up that grill!
Take meats out of the refrigerator 20 minutes before cooking, allowing them to reach room temperature.
Don’t be afraid to use some wood chips for flavor. I like to soak the chips for 1 hour before grilling. I then wrap them in a foil packet and poke a few holes in it. I place the packet on the grate. Mesquite and hickory are my favorites!
Avoid flare ups which almost always lead to burned food. Trim extra fat and skin from meats and keep a spray bottle handy.
Flip don’t stab! Stabbing results in juices running out, decreasing the flavor. Instead of a fork using tongs or a spatula to turn meats.
Keep the lid down and resist peeking. Opening the lid allows heat to escape which can result in longer cooking time.
Stay close by! You never know when a flare up or other problems will occur. You can avoid a dinner disaster by staying close by the grill.
After taking meats off the grill let them rest for a few minutes. Your taste buds will thank you!
