You have fired up the grill and purchased beautiful steaks. Do they fit into a healthy menu? How do you grill the perfect steak? Grilled steak actually does fit in a healthy, clean eating meal plan. Just be mindful of your portion! And there is nothing better than a perfectly grilled steak! Steaks on the grill are a grill lover’s master piece! So how do you grill a steak to perfection? Follow these simple rules and you will succeed!
Choose a good steak – Don’t skimp here – choose the best steak you can afford. A well marbled steak is perfect! They should also be 1 ¼ inch thick to 2 inch thick (I prefer no thicker that 1 ½ inch). Some good choices include:
New York Strip Steak
Rib Eye Steak
Porterhouse
T-bone
Filet Mignon
Flank or Skirt Steak – Cook medium rare; slice against the grain.
Pre-Heat your Grill – Pre-heat your grill on high! Turn down one side to medium before grilling.
Season your steak – Generously season your steak on both sides before grilling.
Avoid Cross-Contamination – Use one tong and plate to carry raw food to the grill and use a different plate and serving tool to bring and serve the cooked steak to the table.
Turn your steak at the right time – Flip your steaks when you see tiny beads of blood beginning to form on the top, approximately 4-6 minutes for a 1″ steak or 8-10 minutes for a 2″ steak. Use tongs to flip your steak as using a fork causes the all the flavorful juices to escape!
Don’t Desert Your Steaks – Stay close to the grill and keep a close watch on those babies! Put out flare ups with a spray bottle to prevent excessive charring and burning.
Remove steaks from the grill with tongs – Let them rest on a platter or cutting board under an aluminum foil tent for 5 – 10 minutes!
