It is summer and that means dinners and cookouts with burgers as the main course. As the summer goes on do you get tired of the same old turkey burgers and hamburgers?
Then fire up the grill and try grilling chicken and apple burgers. These burgers were recommended by my friend, neighbor and fellow coach, Lisa Little. They are bursting with flavor! Poultry seasoning, chicken and apple is an awesome combination! Top those burgers with a little honey mustard, slice of tomato and leaf of lettuce and you have got a delicious burger! I enjoy them without a bun, in between lettuce leaves. But if your meal plan allows it, a nice whole wheat bun compliments this burger nicely and keeps it healthy.
The big test for these unusual burgers was whether or not they were kid friendly….And drum roll please…. They passed the test! My three year old grandson, Finn, gobbled his down without hesitation!
These are pretty quick to put together especially with the help of the food processor for finely chopping the apple and onion. From start to finish they should take about 25 minutes.
Ground chicken tends to be a little mushy. The first time I made them they stuck to the grill (even though I oiled it) and well…made a mess. I found cooking them on top of foil helped but I do love those grill marks on my burgers so I followed the steps below and the result was pretty and delicious chicken burgers!
Cover the grates with foil
Brush the foil lightly with olive oil
When the patties are a light brown on both sides and firm transfer them to a platter and discard the foil.
Lightly oil the grates.
Place the patties directly on the grill and continue cooking until the temperature in the center of the patty reaches 165 degrees.
Be careful not to over cook your burgers or they will be dry.
Grilled Chicken and Apple Burgers
Tired of the same old burgers on the grill? Then give these healthy chicken and apple burgers a try! They are bursting with flavor.
1/4 cup finely chopped green onion (about 4 green onions)
1 1/4 teaspoons poultry seasoning
1/2 teaspoon sea salt or pink Himalayan salt
2 tablespoons apple juice or water
1 pound ground chicken (you can use ground turkey)
Pre-heat the grill.
In a medium to large bowl combine apple, onion, seasonings, and apple juice/water.
Add the ground chicken and mix well.
Shape the chicken mixture into four 1/2 inch thick patties.
When the grill is heated cover the grates with a piece of foil and poke a few holes in it.
Lightly brush olive oil on the foil.
Cook until the patties are light brown on both sides.
Transfer patties to a platter and discard the foil.
Lightly oil the grates with olive oil.
Place the patties directly on the grates and continue cooking until grill marks form and the temperature in the center of the patties reaches 165 degrees.
Turn the patties only once when cooking on the foil and once when grilling directly on the grates.
Serve the chicken apple burgers on a soft whole wheat bun topped with honey mustard, lettuce and tomato.
