Are there days when you just feel fat or fluffy? Or you start out feeling fine but by the end of the day feel 9 months pregnant? Or your pants fit fine in the beginning of the day but by the time night rolls around it seems like they shrunk? And let’s not forget being gassy… We all experience this at some time but during peri-menopause and menopause it is a more frequent experience!
This bloating feeling is just one more symptom of menopause. It is closely related to an increase in intestinal gas and fluid retention caused by, you guessed it, those peskyfluctuating hormones. It can also be associated with weight gain. Bloating is uncomfortable and makes you feel FAT!
The duration and intensity of bloating will vary from woman to woman. A woman can wake up with a flat stomach and then have her stomach distend progressively throughout the day, or the bloating may appear within a matter of minutes and be aggravated by eating.
SO what can you do? It is always recommended that you talk with your doctor. We know that eating often seems to trigger bloating and gas there are foods that may be bigger culprits than others. Likewise there are foods that may alleviate bloating. However each person is different and foods affect all of us in different ways. Therefore keeping a food diary may be a way to identify foods that help and foods that trigger bloating for you.
Foods that often help alleviate bloating include: asparagus, yogurt, pineapple, celery, bananas, grapes, rice, peanut butter, fruit juices, and herbal teas.
Foods to avoid: caffeine, vegetables that are known to cause gas such as broccoli and cauliflower, salty foods, fast food, dairy products, processed foods and trigger foods such as onions, beans, as well as sugary snacks.
I have found that as I “cleaned up” my diet, lost weight, and began exercising regularly I have had fewer instances of feeling fluffy and bloated. Exercise has really helped! Other women have found stress reduction techniques such as yoga or meditation to be helpful. In addition, drinking warm water with lemon can be soothing and help relieve bloating.
